Resident Orientation to the Rheumatology Service
Learning Objectives
Obtain a comprehensive rheumatology history and review of systems
Perform a screening musculoskeletal exam as well as a more detailed exam of individual joints
Differentiate inflammatory from non-inflammatory arthritis
Perform a knee injection
Be able to diagnose and treat gout
Explain how common rheumatologic problems (including rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, CPPD disease, fibromyalgia, and osteoarthritis) are diagnosed and treated
Discuss how less common rheumatologic problems (including SLE, scleroderma, myositis, and vasculitis) are diagnosed and treated.
List the risks and benefits of NSAIDs and corticosteroids
Name the DMARDs, their major side-effects and monitoring requirements
Be able to list the different categories of biologic drugs, their major side-effects, and monitoring requirements
