Learning Objectives

  • Obtain a comprehensive rheumatology history and review of systems

  • Perform a screening musculoskeletal exam as well as a more detailed exam of individual joints

  • Differentiate inflammatory from non-inflammatory arthritis

  • Perform a knee injection

  • Be able to diagnose and treat gout

  • Explain how common rheumatologic problems (including rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis, CPPD disease, fibromyalgia, and osteoarthritis) are diagnosed and treated

  • Discuss how less common rheumatologic problems (including SLE, scleroderma, myositis, and vasculitis) are diagnosed and treated.

  • List the risks and benefits of NSAIDs and corticosteroids

  • Name the DMARDs, their major side-effects and monitoring requirements

  • Be able to list the different categories of biologic drugs, their major side-effects, and monitoring requirements
