Learning Objectives

  • Outpatient Rotation Objectives

    • Know and apply the current colon cancer screening and surveillance guidelines

    • Identify patients at increased risk for colon cancer (FH, IBD, Revised Amsterdam Criteria for HNPCC)

    • Evaluate patients with a clinical presentation of GERD and be able to make further treatment recommendations and/or further testing

    • Be able to apply the ROME criteria to the diagnosis of the most common functional bowel disorders (IBS, dyspepsia, functional bloating) and indications for endoscopy

    • Be able to differentiate UC and Crohn’s and know the impact on treatment decisions

    • Evaluate patients with dysphagia and be able to select the proper diagnostic testing

    • Evaluate elevated LFTs

    • Recognize patient with cirrhosis and management of complications

    • Diagnose and evaluate iron deficiency anemia

  • Inpatient Rotation Objectives

    • Evaluation and initial treatment of non-variceal upper GI bleeding

    • Evaluation and initial treatment of variceal upper GI bleeding

    • Recognize gallstone disease, including cholangitis, and know indications for ERCP

    • Diagnosis and initial management of pancreatitis and work-up for the etiology

    • Be able to identify and manage risk factors for peptic ulcer disease
