Using SlicerDicer to Explore Epic De-identified Data
SlicerDicer is a tool within Epic that allows any users to explore de-identified data. It is accessible to anyone. (Only certain data may be restricted.)
You can access the tool using Chart Search for “SlicerDicer” (then you can pin in it in your Epic taskbar for easy access in future).
Go to Compass, search for “SlicerDicer” to take the training on how to use it.
Briefly: First, define your population. Second, add measures. Third, add slices.
You may save the search for easy re-visit in future, and share it with your colleagues. Click “Load” on the right upper menu to find saved or shared searches.
One of its many uses is to estimate of cohort count. (Another tool for this purpose is OCTRI Cohort Discovery, which requires reserving a training in Compass for access.)
To get a list of patient names/MRN (ie, identified data) and opening their chart will require IRB approval.
Please refer to this presentation for more on Epic tools for clinical research.
