Arterial Blood Gas made ridiculously simple

Follow these steps:

  1. Read through the PPT or watch the video I made. Credit goes to anesthesiologist/intensivist Dr. Sadovnikoff from whom I learned this method as a medical student.

  2. Remember the mantra “1 for 1, 10 for 7, 1-4-2-5”.

    • Note that primary process on the left, physiologic response on the right, and they’re going up/down at the same direction.

    • Use normal values, not a range, when deciding if the numbers are going up/down.

    • Please delete the word “compensation/compensatory“ from your acid-base vocabulary.

  3. Re-do the exercises in this PPT if needed.

  4. Teach others! You may use this handout for your learner.

Expertise guaranteed. You won’t need a reference book when interpreting any blood gas.
